Chamaizi is a small, picturesque village in eastern Crete, about 11 kilometers west of Sitia, located along the north coastal road from Agios Nikolaos. The village has retained its original charm, with narrow streets, steep staircases, and lovingly tended flower arrangements. A special highlight is the local museum, which offers insights into traditional Cretan life. It is located near the village square.
Not far from the village, on the hill of Souvloto Mouri, is the Minoan House of Chamaizi, an important archaeological site. This unique building from the Middle Minoan period (c. 2200–2000 BC) is characterized by its elliptical architecture and is the only known building of this form from the Minoan period.
From the hill, there are impressive views of the surrounding area, including the Bay of Sitia. The archaeological site is freely accessible and can be visited at any time. Access is via a dirt road that branches off the main road between Chamezi and Exo Mouliana.
