Heraklion is the largest city and administrative capital of the island of Crete. The Archaeological Museum houses the remains of the 4000-year-old Minoan civilization, centered around the nearby Palace of Knossos with its Minotaur legend. The city has several Venetian and Byzantine churches and the largest well-preserved 15th-century Venetian wall and port fortress in the eastern Mediterranean, the Koules Fortress.
