Elounda
was once a small fishing village in Mirabello Bay on Crete. Although fishing still plays a large part in life in this picturesque area, tourism has become Elounda's main industry. Elounda belongs to the municipality of Agios Nikolaos and is popular with European tourists. There are many hotels here, including several 5-star hotels. Elounda is also the closest major town to the former leper colony of Spinalonga. Agios Nikolaos and the village of Plaka (Lasithi) can be reached by car in 10 minutes.

Agios Nikolaos is the capital of the county of Lassithi and is located on Mirabello Bay in northeastern Crete.
Geographically, the city is well protected from strong winds, so water sports and swimming are possible almost all year round.
Although Agios Nikolaos has fewer than 20.000 inhabitants, it has several banks, supermarkets, all kinds of shops, doctors, a modern, high-standard hospital, a public swimming pool and tennis courts, a marina, a port, a cinema, a theater, gyms, a 9-hole golf course, schools from kindergarten to six-year high school, and generally all the amenities one would expect from a modern European city.
The microclimate is one of the best in Greece, with moderate temperatures rarely exceeding 30°C in summer and rarely falling below 15°C in winter. This wonderfully dry climate and the region's natural beauty have attracted most of Greece's luxury hotels to locate here.
