The village was established by the Venetians starting in the 12th century. The buildings are in the Venetian style with arches, colonnades, and fortress-like facades. There is a 17th-century fountain, the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary with several preserved frescoes, and the Monastery of Saint Irini, which is a protected historical monument.
Several Venetian houses have been preserved in the village, the most distinctive of which is the three-story house next to the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, with its arched passageway on the ground floor. Near the village is the cave of Lygeri, which belonged to a Levantine woman named Lygeri who was captured by the Turks and sold into slavery in the Middle East.
