Plaka is one of Crete's most traditional villages, set on a hillside overlooking Souda Bay. The beautiful village in the regional district of Chania has all the necessary amenities including an excellent tavern, bars, grocery store and cafes that remain open all year round. The village is just three minutes drive from the sandy beach of Almyrida and five minutes from the village of Kalives. The distance to the historic city of Chania is 27 km, approximately 25-30 minutes by car. The village of Plaka is the ideal place to live as it combines peace and good climate. The inhabitants mainly concern themselves with their farms (olives, vineyards, gardens) and produce very good oil, wine and the traditional Cretan drink Tsikoudia (Raki). A large number of residents are involved in tourism as the area has become a temperate resort in recent years. Some others tend their sheep and goats or fish.
