Spili is a charming traditional mountain village known for its row of Venetian lion head fountains in the main square. Spili is built amphitheatrically in the center of Rethimno Prefecture on a western slope of Mount Kedros, a southwestern extension of Psiloritis at an altitude of 430 m, which supplies the village with flowing waters with its springs. It is popular with hikers and nature lovers because of the wild orchids, flora and beautiful mountain scenery. Spili has a post office, a town hall, a police station, a hairdresser, a few supermarkets and restaurants/cafés. Spili also has many shops selling natural products and handicrafts. There is also a museum at the end of the main path which contains a collection of old historical Cretan handicrafts. The friendly, hospitable people of Spili will welcome you. The locals work mainly in agriculture, animal husbandry and trade, but in recent years they have become more involved in the tourism industry. Spili is known for its excellent olive oil, considered one of the best in Europe, and for some of the tastiest fruits and vegetables in Crete.
