Maroulas is a traditional village located just 9 km east of the north coast of Rethymno, Crete, at an altitude of 240 m. The village's architecture takes you back to the Middle Ages, Renaissance and Turkish occupation years. It is strategically located as it is built on a hilltop, offering panoramic views of the Cretan Sea. There are several tavernas and a kafeneion in the village, but further shopping is available in Platanias, just 2 km away. Rethymno is located in western Crete, between the prefectures of Chania and Heraklion. It is full of magnificent beaches, interesting archaeological sites, Byzantine churches, beautiful villages and lively resorts. Rethymno is the capital of the region and a city with intense medieval architecture and a beautiful Venetian harbor. Bali, Agia Galini, Plakias Stavromenos and Adelianos Kampos are among the most popular beach resorts in the area, while by car you can reach countless secluded bays with absolute privacy. Interesting sights in the region include the historic monasteries of Preveli and Arkadi, the Ideon Cave, where according to mythology the god Zeus grew up, and the many other gorges inland from Rethymno.
