Kokkino Chorio (Red Village) is located above Plaka, about 27 km from Chania at an altitude of 150 meters and is one of the most traditional villages in the area with stone houses, beautiful churches and a picturesque square. The village has about 300 permanent residents and offers stunning panoramic views of Souda Bay and the majestic White Mountains. At the village entrance there is a glass processing factory / glass blowing workshop which is open to visitors. In the village there are the churches of Agios Georgios, Agia Ekaterini and Agios Charalambos. Kokkino Chorio offers tourist accommodation, taverns and cafes for those who want to spend a few quiet days in the traditional Cretan countryside. You can also stroll through the narrow village streets and feel transported back in time as the village has retained its old world charm. Kokkino Chorio has a beautiful location and leaves an enchanting, romantic impression on every visitor. Above the village rises the hill of Drapanokefala, and to the north of the village is Cape Drepano. At Cape Drepano, 10 meters above the sea, is the "Cave of the Elephants", whose 60 × 60 m space is decorated with stalactites and stalagmites. During the revolution of 1821, 150 women and children sought refuge in one of the caves in the area, but despite the difficult access to the cave, the Turks managed to find them. They carried out a massacre. There are many caves near the village, such as the "Petsi Cave" and the "Katalymata" in the center of the village. There are several beaches nearby with crystal clear water and mostly sandy beaches. Scenes from the famous film "Zorbas the Elephant", based on the novel by the Cretan author Nikos Kazantzakis, were also filmed here.
