Kato Valsamonero, or Varsamonero, is a village and the administrative center of the municipality of the same name in the Rethymno region of Crete. It lies 14 kilometers from Rethymno at an altitude of 250 meters.
South of the old Rethymno-Chania national road, at the foot of Nipoi Hill, facing south, lies Kato Valsamonero with its 223 inhabitants. From here, visitors are treated to a breathtaking panorama: the Chania plain, the Cretan Sea, the White Mountains, and Mount Psiloritis. The village, traditionally considered the oldest in Crete, was a center of resistance against the German occupation (with the famous Vasiles Cave located south of the settlement) and, before that, against Ottoman rule. The jewel of the village is the well-preserved Church of Agios Ioannis Chrysostomos, adorned with frescoes from the late 14th century. A portion of the statue of the Virgin Mary in the village center also survives.
Kato Valsamonero is located southwest of Rethymno, just 15 minutes from the city.
