Elounda is also the closest major town to the former Spinalonga leper colony. The town is 10 minutes drive from Agios Nikolaos and the village of Plaka (Lasithi). -

Elounda is a place name that is easy to pronounce but difficult to describe. It is a place that you can only experience in person and then live in your dreams forever.
Elounda is located in eastern Crete, 10 km north of Agios Nikolaos, near the northwest side of Mirabello Bay. The area is a renowned resort with luxurious hotels to suit the most expensive tastes. The small town of Elounda lies on the edge of the idyllic lagoon of Korfos Bay, which lies between the Spinalonga peninsula and Crete. Spinalonga is one of Crete's landmarks. It is known for its small pebble beaches and shallow waters. The island is easily accessible by boat from Elounda.
Aside from its glamorous character, Elounda has some of the most beautiful landscapes in Crete, landscapes strongly dominated by the majestic small beaches of Elounda. The region's most popular beach is located east of Elounda in the Skisma region. The beach borders the harbor and is very well organized by the local community. Here you can swim next to small hotels and taverns of Elounda. The beach is sandy and the water is always calm due to the calm lagoon of Korfos.
