Akrotiri is a 112 km² peninsula in northwest Crete, consisting of the towns of Aroni, Chordaki, Kounoupidiana, Mouzouras and Sternes.
Akrotiri was originally purely agricultural, with gardening and olive cultivation predominating in the lower parts.
There is now a lot of construction going on, especially in the southwestern part near the coast. The proximity to the big city of Chania makes this part of the peninsula an attractive residential area, and the city of Chania is growing beyond its municipal boundaries here.
Tourism is spreading near the beaches, where there are sandy bays. In addition to residential development, entire “villages” of holiday apartments are also being built here.
