Halepa (also Chalepa) is one of the most beautiful and historic areas of Chania, located on the east side. The area is considered the aristocratic quarter of the city, with historic buildings and old mansions, many of them in the neoclassical architectural style. The most important political events of Crete took place in Chalepa at the end of the 19th century, such as the signing of the "Treaty of Chalepa" in 1878, which granted the island partial autonomy. During the Cretan democracy, Chalepa was home to many wealthy merchants and politicians and became the center of diplomatic activities in Crete. Here stands the house of Eleftherios Venizelos, one of the most successful statesmen of modern Greece. Other historic buildings of the area worth seeing are the old Greek Embassy, the old French Academy, which now serves as the Cretan School of Architecture, the Palace of Prince George and the picturesque Russian-style Church of Saint Magdaline. Today, the Chalepa district is an upscale suburb of the city of Chania, whose rich history is evident in its neighbourhoods. The area's proximity to the centre of Chania and the beautiful views over the city and the coast make it a desirable residential area.
