Almyrida is located 23 km east of Chania on the south side of Souda Bay and 1 km west of Plaka. It is a quiet resort with good infrastructure and beautiful sea. The untouched landscape and green olive groves around Almyrida are ideal places for hikers.
Just 1 km to the east lies the picturesque Plaka, the largest village in the region. Plaka is known for its healthy climate and the hospitality of its residents. In the area there are sea caves of rare natural beauty (e.g. Nerospilia), traditional narrow streets and old, well-maintained houses.
Almyrida, characterized as a natural beauty area since 1977, has two good sandy beaches, shallow and safe for children. The beaches are separated by a very small rocky peninsula. They are well organized and famous for water sports and windsurfing. There are seaside taverns known for their good fresh fish and delicious local dishes.
Opposite the beach is the small island of Karga, where you can go on sea trips and fishing. The island is an ideal, natural habitat for many birds. Also on the island there are still remains of the ancient Phoenician walls and the galleries that were built during the Second World War.
About 4 km east is Kokkino Chorio, a small village where you can see the German galleys that the Germans built during the occupation to protect the southern port of Souda.
