Agios Onoufrios is a small coastal village on the Akrotiri peninsula, 8 km north of Chania. The village is actually a suburb of Chania as it is very close to the city. It is named after the small chapel next to the beach, dedicated to Saint Onoufrios, whose feast day is on June 12th.
The beach of Agios Onoufrios is quiet and hidden in a well-protected bay. It is sandy and not very well organized. It is mainly preferred by the residents of the wider area. The picturesque landscape with the traditional taverns and the calm sea is a good reason to visit Agios Onoufrios. Only the fuel tanks northwest of the beach do not fit so well into the idyllic picture.
It is a sought after area, especially by locals who want to live outside the city but still be close to all amenities. Agios Onoufrios is closer to the coast and also offers crystal clear waters and a sandy beach with special facilities for the disabled. The neighbouring village of Kounoupidiana is growing rapidly and now offers a wide range of shopping and amenities including large supermarkets, banks, travel agents, restaurants, fast food outlets and shops. It is also home to the Technical University of Crete and primary and secondary schools. Just a short drive away are the beautiful sandy beaches of Kalathas and Stavros.- Outlook: Seaview
