The seaside resort of Bali lies in a large gulf, 30 km east of Rethymno and 43 km west of Heraklion. The national road between Heraklion and Rethymno runs alongside the village, making Bali accessible from any part of the island. Bali has four beaches created in sandy bays with beautiful, greenish waters. They are all well organized and suitable for children. There are also several springs that bring fresh water from the distant Psiloritis Mountains to the sea. Some beaches are arranged around the small harbor in the city center. The bay itself is well protected from waves, giving the sea a calm nature, almost like a lake. You can rent all kinds of water sports equipment: pedal boats, canoes, water skis, etc. Experienced swimmers can swim to the small islands off the coast. There is a much larger beach outside of town towards the highway.
Bali is a modern resort with a variety of taverns, restaurants, small shops, a diving school, bars, discos, a clinic and a pharmacy. In addition, excursion boats leave daily from the local port to Rethymno to admire the unique coastline with beautiful caves and rock formations. The main attractions of the region are the Atali Monastery, dedicated to St. John, and the Church of Panagia Charakiani.
